Demo Derby: Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light

Tomb Raider.

Do those words send a shiver through your... umm, veins? (That's appropriate, right?) Do visions of Angelina Jolie dance in your head?

Crystal Dynamics, creators of the classic Tomb Raider franchise, have brought our favorite buxom British archaeologist back for another romp. But hold on to your tank tops and short shorts, folks, cuz this is Lara like you've never seen her before -- top down.

Lara and Toltec

No, not like--get your minds out of the gutter, dear readers! Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is not the next installment of the franchise (which was just recently revealed and is featured in this month's issue of Game Informer) that was partly the inspiration for the Uncharted series, but rather a fun co-op (local and online) adventure starring Lara and Toltec, the eponymous guardian.

The demo for Guardian of Light when live on XBLA and PSN on the same day the game dropped (two months ago for Sony fans, a few weeks earlier for Xbots), and the demo levels are a doozy. Not having played many top down shooters (or Tomb Raider games, sadly), I was a little thrown off by the game's mechanics at first. But once I got the hang of it, this demo was really engaging. The platforming can be tricky, especially if you're playing it solo, but it's just challenging enough to be exciting rather than frustrating. The weapons are pretty fun to use, especially the enchanted spear Lara receives early on, which is also extremely important for platforming in single-player. And for those trophy/achievement hunters out there, Guardian of Light has a ton of collectibles, challenges and the like to tickle your fancy.

Getting their murder on
Fans of the early 3D-gaming of the 90's have a nostalgic love affair with the Tomb Raider franchise. While Lara's previous crop of current- and last-generation titles have been met with lukewarm reception by critics, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light seems to be the shot in this arm that this beloved franchise and heroine have needed. Go download the demo now and give Lara another ride... no, not that kind of ride, sicko!
